Rights and duties of voters

In elections for the Parliament of Catalonia the following people may vote:

  • People who have the political status of Catalan, are over 18 on the day of the vote, are not in any of the situations whereby they are legally deprived of the right to vote and are registered on the electoral roll. 
  • Spanish citizens living abroad whose last legal residence was in Catalonia and can demonstrate this in the relevant Spanish consulate, and also their descendants who are registered as Spanish citizens if they apply to in the way determined by law.

No. No one may be compelled to vote or coerced under any pretext in the exercise of their right to vote, or to disclose how they vote.

You can exercise your right by: 

  • Voting in person, at the corresponding polling station committee.
  • Postal voting, by previously submitting an application to your provincial office of the Electoral Roll Office, which can be done at any post office. 

In addition to voting in person and postal voting in Spain, there are other voting procedures which are explained in the "Types of voting" section and which are as follows: 

  • Voting in person (voting at the polling station committee).
  • Postal voting (in Spain).
  • Voting by voters residents abroad (CERA).
  • Voting by voters who are temporarily abroad (ERTA).
  • Accessible voting for voters with visual disabilities.
  • Voting by ill or disabled voters.
  • Voting by personnel onboard ships.
  • Voting by personnel on missions abroad.
  • Voting by prisoners.

Yes. Everyone who is or turns 18 on 27 September can vote.
