In the presentation of the project on the Catalan Government's portal, it states that gencat is an innovative redefinition of the concept of an eGovernment portal. This new slant is based on the cooperation of the various organising units, through the creation of a shared ICT services centre and on transparency in presenting the information and the services according to the demand of the citizens.
The redesign of the website helped gencat receive 70 million hits in 2006 and undergo and growth of 69.7% on last year's figures. According to the Survey of the Mass Media Association, it is the sixth most visited website in Catalonia and the thirtieth in the whole of Spain.
Another of the notable aspects of gencat is the use of Web 2.0 tools, such as blogs, wikis or forums, which are integrated in the e-Catalunya platform of social networks. This platform brings together more than 30 communities of citizens and professionals with more than 4,000 registered users.
In May 2006, gencat was given a mention in the public administrations category of the Stockholm Challenge 2006 international awards. This recognition placed gencat as one of the five best websites in the public administrations ICT initiatives category.
That same year, gencat was also given the ComputerWorld 2006 Award for the Impact on Citizens of Catalonia. This prestigious award, offered by ComputerWorld magazine, recognises the entity that has been most committed to citizen welfare.
