The next elections to the Parliament of Catalonia will take place on 21 December 2017.

The Parliament is the institution representing the people of Catalonia.

The Parliament exercises its legislative power, approves the Generalitat’s (Government of Catalonia) budget and controls and promotes political and governmental action. It also exercises the rest of the powers attributed to it by the legal system and, in particular, by The Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia.

The Parliament of Catalonia is currently composed of 135 MPs.

These 135 MPs are divided into four constituencies in the following manner:

  • Barcelona, 85
  • Tarragona, 18
  • Girona, 17
  • Lleida, 15

The MPs are elected by universal, free, equal, direct and secret suffrage. Each constituency elects its corresponding number of deputies in accordance with the Statute of Autonomy.

The electoral system is one of proportional representation. The Hondt method is the electoral formula by which the seats are distributed between the lists of candidatures that have obtained, as a minimum, 3% of the valid votes cast in the constituency.
