The opening of the Llobregat desalination plant and the improvements carried out to the water treatment plants of Abrera and Sant Joan Despí will permit an improvement in the quality and taste of the water supplied to the metropolitan area.
The Llobregat river has always had a high level of salinity, which is the result of the existence of a natural potassium basin and the mining activity that has taken place in Central Catalonia since the nineteenth century and which still continues today.
These improvements will have a direct effect with a potential saving of between 35 and 45 euros per year due to the saving on the repair of home appliances, water pumps, the need for less energy for the heating of water and a decrease in the use of detergents and softeners, and individual domestic osmosis devices, etc.
This desalination plant will permit the delivery (see photograph) of new supplies of water to the large regional network of Aigües Ter-Llobregat through the distribution station of Fontsanta, from where the supply network is connected.
